JPMF turns on the water on and turns over the keys to the Fairfax County Park Authority who will operate Our Special Harbor. Entry to Our Special Harbor is free of charge to individuals.
Our Special Harbor Sprayground Is a fully accessible park inspired by Joey's love of the water and the Chesapeake Bay. Serving as a sensory and creative family destination, the park encourages children of ALL abilities to embark on a water adventure in a safe, zero-water-depth environment. Our Special Harbor's unique design breaks down barriers, encourages interaction, and provides families and children of all abilities a place to play and have fun together!
JPMF recognizes the different challenges that families raising children with special needs face and understand how important it is for families to feel comfortable in public settings where they can enjoy new experiences together. One of the outcomes of the JPMF Splash program we are most proud of is that families reported sharing water activities together. This inspired JPMF to take the next step by creating a place for families to enjoy time together in an Inclusive and accessible place Joey would have loved, Our Special Harbor!
Scheduled to open May, 2011, Our Special Harbor will be part of a family-focused outdoor recreation complex at Lee District Park in Fairfax County which will also include a fully accessible treehouse and playground. Through our unique partnership with Fairfax County, this special place will come to the public at no extra cost.
Come spend a day and let Our Special Harbor become your special harbor!
